Gandhi’s London Adventure and a Lesson in Simplicity
In 1888, when 19-year-old Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi sailed to England to study law, it was a pivotal moment. From a traditional Indian household, Gandhi was keen to fit into British society and even attempted to adopt their customs. He bought expensive suits, wore a silk top hat, and attended elocution lessons to perfect his English accent. At first, Gandhi thought that to succeed in life, he had to conform to Western ideals and appearances.
